We are collecting questions and comments from frontier workers in Vorarlberg (particularly those working in the EEA (i.e. Liechtenstein and Switzerland)) as well as those working in German. If you have a question you would like us to try to get the embassy to answer on your behalf, please let us know – by e-mail through our mailbox frontierworkers@britishinaustria.net. We’re aware that there are questions about the GMB and the lack of opportunities in some sectors in Vorarlberg compared with Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

Hello Mike, I have the first proper written information regarding the 3CN situation for frontier workers living in Austria and working in Liechtenstein (FL). This was a message to our HR department at our company from the relevant Liechtenstein office/authority. Attached below. Perhaps this info should be displayed here though. Essentially:
We currently have a GMB (Grenzgängermeldebestätigung) which is usually for EWR Staatsangehörigen mit Wohnsitz in EWR or Switzerland. We can keep these GMB cards if we stay in our jobs or we make a seamless move within FL with no break between jobs/employers.

If we have a break in jobs we then become 3CNs due to loss of FoM and need to apply for the G (Grenzgängerbewilligung) to work in FL again which is for Nicht EWR oder nicht CH-Staatsangehörige mit Wohnsitz im EWR (Austria for us) oder in der Schweiz. The GMBs are not limited in number presumably but the Gs are – hence the disadvantage.

Any new Brits coming to Austria now obviously have the double whammy of applying to live there and then applying for a 3CN visa (G) to work in FL.

As I suspected – it “traps” those of us with jobs to a degree.

          All the best
          Jo

Betreff: AW: Anfrage betr. GMB-Bewilligung von UK-Personen aufgrund vom Brexit

          Guten Morgen

Thank you Jo – we’ll add some FAQs and credit you – I’ll also try to find out similar for those in Switzerland.
