According to the figures published by Statistik Austria, as of 01.01.2022 there were 11,225 British citizens living in Austria. There may be more, since some might have used a second (EU) nationality for the authorities to take advantage of continuing onward freedom of movement.
Only in Burgenland (+15 or 10%) was there an increase in the number of British citizens, while Steiermark (-72 or -7%) saw the largest decrease, ahead of Oberösterreich, Salzburg and Tirol, indicating that the combination of Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic might have affected numbers of “swallows” coming for the winter season.
