If you are one of the nearly 3,000 British Citizens in Austria with a 5-year Article 50 TEU card, then 2025 is the year for you. You will most likely have been resident in Austria some time before 1st January 2021. During 2025, you may have been legally resident for 5 years and entitled to apply for permanent residence (10-year Article 50 card).
Benefits in Austria include:
- More generous absence rules – 5 years continuous absence instead of 6 months in 12-month period.
- Ease of renewal – lasts 10 years and easier to satisfy the criteria. Once you have permanent residence, the renewal process is simpler.
- Fewer restrictions with financial services providers.
Your current Article 50 card probably expires in 2026. Don’t let it expire, as this may cause you issues (e.g. following EES and ETIASEuropean Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) The European Commission's proposed European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is intended to strengthen security checks on those persons who travel visa-free to the EU, currently nationals from over 60 countries. The largely automated IT system will identify any security or irregular migratory risks posed by visa-exempt visitors travelling to the Schengen area, whilst at the same time facilitating crossing borders for the vast majority of travellers who do not pose such risks. Non-EU nationals who do not need a visa to travel to the Schengen area will have to apply for a travel authorisation through the ETIAS system prior to their trip. As of July 2024, its go live is scheduled for Spring 2025. roll-out).
