I am assuming that you have seen our generic moving guide – https://www.britishinaustria.net/the-guide/moving-to-from-austria/moving-from-the-uk-to-austria/
In my case I moved before Brexit but used Britannia Bearsby who are based in Kent (close enough to London) and were able to get a partial load – https://bearsbys.com/moving-abroad/. I also used UPS via Parcel2Go for shipping around 30 boxes. Would recommend looking at a BAR member – https://bar.co.uk/moving-to-another-country/ BUT my experience was that they all shut down over July and August and only start up in September. There are a few posts in our Facebook group on this topic (search for “moving”) – https://www.facebook.com/groups/BritishAustria-

Hi, I don’t have kids but I moved from Kent to Lower Austria. Austria is a lovely country but there are a few things that you need to be aware of it. It is a Germanic speaking country and although you might get away with speaking English in Vienna, there are a lot of professions that will be off limits if your German language skills are at least B1. You may also have issues getting your UK qualifications recognised. The ease with which you can move here might also depend on your nationality. If you do not have EU Citizenship you will need to find a job first. Our Moving guide might help you to start with:
https://www.englishspeakers.at/post/guide-to-the-austrian-education-systemPlus points – Vienna is easier to get around than London (population of London is probably the same as the whole of Austria). Public transport is really cheap compared to the UK

Sorry we missed this! Thank you for the feedback. We have just started our feedback form and would be grateful if you could add the information there – https://www.britishinaustria.net/article-50-upgrade-process-feedback-2026/

I have sent you an email and would be grateful if you could send us the blank form, so that we can take a look. He may have been given a Third Country National form in error. It would be useful to establish if this has been an administrative error or something else. All the standard BMI forms are here – https://www.bmi.gv.at/312/60a/start.aspx
The information we have from the BMI is that the provinces (and the BH’s) are allowed to adapt their own forms and we had this case in Vienna last year. There is no legal requirement to use the BMI form, however they should however accept the published BMI form. If they want to use their own form they also need to publicise it (Article 37) Withdrawal Agreement.

The information from the BMI on this topic is quite clear –
“If you are the holder of a residence permit “Artikel 50 EUV” with a validity period of 5 years you should apply for an extension before the 5 years expire. You won´t receive a reminder. Therefore, please make a note of this deadline and set a reminder in your calendar. However, a later application does not automatically lead to the loss of your right of residence.”“Wenn Sie einen Aufenthaltstitel “Artikel 50 EUV” mit einer Gültigkeitsdauer von 5 Jahren haben, sollten Sie vor Ablauf der 5 Jahre um eine Verlängerung ansuchen. Sie bekommen keine Erinnerung. Notieren sie sich daher diese Frist und setzen Sie eine Erinnerung in Ihrem Kalender. Eine spätere Antragstellung führt aber nicht automatisch zum Verlust ihres Aufenthaltsrechts.”
There are only a few reasons for someone to lose their residence rights and that is being absent from Austria for more than 6 months in a 12 month period (12 months for exceptional reasons) or some sort of criminal activity. I am not aware of anyone losing their A50 residence rights yet!
Just in case, here is the appeals process – https://www.britishinaustria.net/the-guide/residence/a50brits/art-50-euv-card-appeals/
and if you don’t get and joy there, you can take it up with the Volksanwaltschaft – https://volksanwaltschaft.gv.at/en/

The BMI introduced new forms sometime after the end of October which are linked on their Brexit website specifically for the upgrade. These are linked on our Website – https://www.britishinaustria.net/the-guide/residence/a50brits/article-50-cards-forms-and-guidance/
These can be found in the “Daueraufenthaltsrecht nach dem Austrittsabkommen” section of the BMI German Brexit site and also under the ” Permanent right of residence according to the Withdrawal Agreement” section in English (see links below).

As an aside, we have a quite comprehensive guide about moving from the UK to Austria – https://www.britishinaustria.net/the-guide/moving-to-from-austria/moving-from-the-uk-to-austria/

Sorry, I didn’t see this. There is an article on our website that covers this. Do not understimate the cost of doing this, the main thing you will get stung with is the NoVA tax and that depends on the WLTP CO2 value of your vehicle. You may also need to change things like the headlamps and other things to make it roadworthy in Austria. In addition, Vehicle insurance is expensive in Austria and can depend on the CO2 value of the vehicle. https://www.britishinaustria.net/the-guide/motoring-in-austria/importing-a-vehicle-to-austria/
Use this site for vehicle insurance comparisons, but it is a LOT more expensive than the UK.- https://durchblicker.at/autoversicherung

Hi, apologies for the delay in responding as I don’t check this that ofteen. What I can tell you is that ANY gap in health insurance could prevent you gaining the 10 year Article 50 card. I would recommend that you sort that out before applying. We had people denied permanent residence with 2 weeks gaps back in 2021. You might get away with, but you might not. Given the gap was relatively recent, it might be spotted.

On the assumption you have the 10 year Article 50 card, that allows for a 5 year continuous absence. Your Austrian wife will need to apply for a Visa if she wants to live in the UK for more than 6 months. She is also not allowed to work in the UK unless she has a Visa. – https://www.britishinaustria.net/faq/how-will-temporary-absences-be-calculated-in-relation-to-the-5-year-art-50-euv-card/
You and your wife should also check out this guide – https://www.britishinaustria.net/the-guide/moving-to-from-austria/moving-from-austria-back-to-the-uk/
The exception to the Visa rule would apply if your Austrian wife has EU Settled Status in the UK

Hi, As this is rather a niche area you might get better answers to this on our Facebook Group as there are more members. On the assumption you are a British National try British in Europe ~ Austria – https://www.facebook.com/groups/BritishinAustria. If you are not a British National then try English Speakers in Austria – https://www.facebook.com/groups/austria.english.speakers. As an alternative for British Nationals, you can try the British Embassy in Vienna (or France) – https://www.gov.uk/world/organisations/british-embassy-vienna#contact-us
For me personally, I arrived before Brexit, so different rules applied. As an aside, here is the French Customs guide – https://www.douane.gouv.fr/french-customs-information-available-english#Travellers

Actually I am not sure in this situation and it might be better to contact the Austrian pension authority. But I think the answer depends on whether you have contributions elsewhere you can use to help you qualify. Perhaps this article helps you though – https://www.britishinaustria.net/the-guide/financial-bootcamp/pensions/

The information from the team at British in Europe is that “It is sufficient to come back for just a few days.” The European Commission are due to publish guidelines on this issue, but have not done so yet! The British in Europe team have seen a draft.
Just in case, here is the Case precedent which involves someone with a Long Term resident EU permit – https://curia.europa.eu/juris/document/document.jsf;jsessionid=C181B47DB18EE32CB80FCC99D8A4D945?text=&docid=252448&pageIndex=0&doclang=en&mode=lst&dir=&occ=first&part=1&cid=5212406

Firstly with a 10 year card you are allowed a 5 year CONTINUOUS absence. That means you can be away from Austria for up to 5 years without losing your residence rights. I have not actually seen it documented what you need to do to maintain this residence, however I do believe the EU were meant to clarify it. If it is of any consolation there was a recent case that went to European Court of Justice that relates to Austria (Long Term resident Third Country National) and they found it was sufficient to come back for a few days. We will get this clarified: https://curia.europa.eu/jcms/upload/docs/application/pdf/2022-01/cp220010en.pdf
